Building Partnerships to Strengthen Communities
Chicago, Illinois April 21–23
ESLARP's representaion at the HUD COPC conference this year was very strong. We presented in a total of five sessions. The following are brief descriptions of the presentations.
“Finding Common Goals” (Link to PowerPoint presentation)
Presenters: Fern Watts, South End New Development Organization, Janni Sorensen, University of Illinois and Stacy Harwood, University of Illinois
The presentation began with a description of the university-community partnership in the South End neighborhood. Professor Harwood also discussed current conditions of the South End neighborhood, a brief overview of ESLARP involvement in the community and examples of some of the project taken on by the South End New Development Organization and ESLARP. Following that, Ms. Watts spoke about her experience as a community leader, particularly in working with the University of Illinois. She handed out SENDO pens (one of the results of our work together). She suggested that the community partners in the audience should go “Find yourself a university…” Finally, Janni Sorensen concluded with a summary of opportunities for students, opportunities for SENDO and partnership challenges.
