Outreach Weekend Report - March 10-11, 2006

Weekend Summary

GSLIS Community Technology Centers By Martin Wolske

This last weekend during our visit to East St. Louis LIS 451 students worked with local Teen Tech crews to refurbish 46 computers. These computers, donated to Prairienet by Parkland College, Carle Foundation Hospital, and others, were setup with Windows 98, a suite of applications, and modems. They will be donated to individuals within the East St. Louis community as a part of various training programs. One community member commented on the value one such computer, refurbished previously, has had on helping students in a family who could now do their homework at home instead of having to search out alternate computer access. There were many positive comments from both LIS students and Teen Tech members on how enjoyable it was to work together for the day on this project. In addition, the LIS 451 students met with 6 organizations who will be receiving new or upgraded computer labs at the end of the semester.

Opal's House by Bridgette Richardson

Friday: It took only 10 volunteers to finish tearing out floors and begin repairing plaster and drywall Friday. Students assessed problems with the roof of the building and repaired guttering. This weekend ESLARP alums, Jassen Johnson and Brent & Jennifer Hardy, joined at Opal’s House.
