April 5, 2014

On Saturday, April 5th, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign kicks off National Volunteer Week with an inaugural Community-Campus Day of Service. Over 60 students, faculty and staff worked with six community partners on seven projects to complete pre-construction projects, community garden spring preparation projects, flyering in the community, reorganizing classrooms at Tap in Leadership Academy, cataloging choral literature, and preparing a Bee Garden. A big thank you goes out to all who helped on April 20!

Outreach Weekend Report - November 6-6, 2009

Weekend Summary
A small group of University of Illinois students traveled to ESL for the day to participate in a couple of projects with ESLARP Community Partners. Olivette Park Neighborhood ARCH 576 students conducted interviews with member of the Olivette Park Neighborhood in a effort to continue research regarding the occupancy of this neighborhood in the heart of East St Louis. 41st Street/Pullman Porter Park FAA 291 students worked with community partners at 41st Street/Pullman Porter Park, a piece of land that was donated by the railroad company to neighborhood members. Over the years, the community members, in partnership with ESLARP, have turned the former unused plot of land into a beautiful landscaped park with a gravel walkway. Eleven student volunteers cleared away brush near the railroad tracks, planted additional prairie grasses along the gravel path, and weeded around planted beds. The Joseph Center/Eagle’s Nest FAA 291 students worked with Martha Watts at The Joseph Center to clean up the facility’s grounds in preparation for the November 13th Dedication Ceremony. Over the past nine years, ESLARP has assisted Martha in her valiant efforts to open the doors of The Eagle’s Nest of St Clair County in order to give homeless veterans shelter, and a chance to rebuild and sustain their lives. Five student volunteers raked and transported fallen leaves to a compost pile in the rear of the property. The students, along with Martha, George and Jenna, cleared the entire property of leaves. They also mowed the lawn and picked up roadside trash. What a beautiful fall day, perfect to work outside!!
