Beth Campbell, Randall
Butler, and Rodney Howlett II, have constructed this webpage in order to
publish our research on Universal Design.
For our Fall Semester of Senior Design Studio, Architecture 371,
at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign,
our project is to design one of ten affordable houses for
the East Saint Louis Area, specifically Emerson
Park.
There are thirty-two people
in our design studio, composing a total of ten groups. We have already
studied our own dwellings and analyzed what is convenient
and what is a nuisance, through countless
interior elevations and sections, floorplans, and
a sketch model. We have spoken with our roomates,
analyzed our own experiences, and made conclusions
about our own dorm rooms or apartments.
We have discussed among ourselves, and together
as a class, exactly what characteristics make a dwelling
seem more private, what makes a house seem larger,
why does one space feel more confining than another,
what specifically makes a house seem welcoming or
lived in, and the list could go on.
Following the brief evaluation
of our own residences, each group embarked on an intensive week and a
half research project. Our group has been
researching universal design and all possible associated topics
for the past week, and here it is, on our first
web page, a first for all of us. We will be heading down to
East Saint Louis with ESLARP, East Saint Louis Action
Research Project, twice this semester to speak
with representatives of those who will be inhabiting
the houses we design. Let us know what you think of our site.
