President Clinton's New Markets Initiative brought him to East St. Louis on Tuesday July 6th, 1999. The faculty, staff and students of ESLARP and the NTAC were there in full force. Despite the 100+ degree weather and sudden downpour of rain we all stayed and to our amazement the rain stopped as Clinton appeared. With him and his entourage were East St. Louis' Mayor Powell, Reverend Jessie Jackson, Jackie Joyner Kersee and a host of other VIPs. Clinton appeared in the parking lot of the new Walgreens store in East St. Louis.
Attendees were entertained by the Kathryn Dunham Dancers and a group of very enthusiastic young people from the New Salem District Baptist Church. The day was very hot and very wet but in the end we were all happy we had been there.
