Writing this history has been both an educational and exciting process. We could not have completed this project without the help of many people. We are indebted to the Emerson Park residents for letting us record your stories of achievement and struggle. We admire your dedication to improving quality of life in the Emerson Park neighborhood. We are grateful for the support of the Emerson Park Development Corporation, Lessie Bates Davis Neighborhood House and East St. Louis Action Research Project staff. Without your assistance we would not have been able to make contact with neighborhood activists, locate old photographs and feel welcome in East St. Louis. Not only did we learn a great deal from residents and staff, but they have inspired us to continue to work for social change. While many people provided valuable information, all interpretations and short comings are our own.
