RENE PHILIPPE BAQUET, PA.C.

Mr. Baquet was born in St. Louis, Missouri on September 16, 1951. He is married to the former Beverly Fitzgerald and their anniversary is August 23rd. He is a member of St. Catherine of Sienna Church where the Rev. Paul Anthony is Pastor. He is responsible, honest, industrious, cheerful, practical and orderly. They are the parents of one son, Phillippe, who is almost five now.

As a Black man in this Christian society, I feel that I have learned to be more tolerant and patient with people in general.

My greatest personal achievement was at first to be successful in my chosen profession, but now I wish to be the best father I can be in relating to my son.

I find that we all handle adversities in different manners. I find that for me, taking a cool, calm, rational approach, assessing the problem, and trying to work towards at least an amenable or compromise alternative to whatever the difficulty might be, is best.

I am a Physician's Assistant at St. Mary's Health Center. I like the idea of being able to help people, working and inter-relating to different people. I especially like surgery because you can feel that you have actually done something that will make the patient better.

DISCRIMINATION: An instance of discrimination which occurred while I was a student at St. Louis University, I was enrolled in an organic chemistry class along with maybe half a dozen other Blacks. The class started with nearly 300 students. All of the Black students would study and prepare for exams together. The course was very difficult and was known to be a flunk-out course for those in pre-med and those seeking a B. S. degree in Chemistry. At mid-term, I was told by my professor that I needed to put a little

more work into it if I wanted a passing grade. Most of the Blacks in this class were told the same thing. Well, we continued our study sessions. I did very well in my lab classes. I attended all lectures and sessions. I did very well in my lab classes. I attended all lectures and turned in all homework assignments on time. I felt I at least had a C, only because my exam grades were fair. Anyway, by the end of the semester after grades were out, all of us got together again to compare grades. What we found was that only one Black got a C, the rest got D's and F's. We protested and took our case to the grievances chairman of the University Ombudsman. In turn, there was a hearing with top university officials and the professor. Our grades were not changed, but after that semester that particular rofessor took an unscheduled and abrupt sabbatical. I feel what we did may not have helped us personally, but did help those who were to follow.

One must know the enemy, head on, and not be afraid to tackle him, otherwise you will be defeated.

I received corporal punishment as a child. I don't remember the last bad thing I did as a child. I was hardly ever mischievous and was too afraid to be outright disobedient.

I presently reside in University City, Mo. My community is very cosmopolitan, young, liberal and integrated. it is near to shopping centers, Forest Park and the city. I don't realIy feel that I am living in the suburbs here. My neighborhood is quiet and the neighbors are friends. I feel comfortable and relatively safe in this area.
