CURTIS LEE BELT

Mr. Belt was born in West Point, MS on April 19,1938. He is married to the former Lula Mae Miller and their anniversary is April 29, 1959. He is a member of the First Baptist Church of Golden Gardens.

He is courteous, cheerful, courageous, tolerant, ambitious and responsible. He and Mrs. Belt are the parents of five sons and one daughter; Curtis, Jr., Roderick James, Fredrick James, Errol Mathias, Christopher Raynard Belt and Yvonne Belt McCall.

Four of our children have finished high school. Our oldest son, Curtis, Jr. is a member of Local 42 as a truck driver. I feel I inspired them to work in construction by my willingness to do construction work through the years.

As a Black man in this Christian society, I have learned to love those people whose ways and actions I do not understand.

My greatest personal achievement was learning how to drive a car and operate heavy equipment after losing my hands in an accident at work.

The above accident was also an adversity which I had to overcome. The accident was in 1965 in which I nearly lost my life.  Through prayer and an understanding wife and the help of our children, I overcame. I got strength from God.

I am now employed as a construction worker. I love my job, in that I meet many different people, and I don't have to do the same thing every day. I am self-employed at C. Belt Excavating.

A surprise birthday party, a certificate of ordination from my church, and a trophy for playing baseball are my most prized memories and awards.

My hobbies are fishing, barbecuing and traveling.

THE JEFFERSONS, DALLAS and FAMILY FEUD are my favorite television programs.

My favorite book is "The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pitman" for it tells of the strength of one Black woman and reflects on the strength of all Blacks if we stand up and fight.

Childhood punishment: As a youngster, my uncle and I borrowed my father's car without his knowledge. We didn't know how to drive, so our short ride ended with the car in a ditch. My father made us push the car all the way home after it was pulled out of the ditch.

Also, as a youngster, I used to get into many things and break them. I would always say it Was an accident-that I didn't do it on purpose. A lot of times I got by with this excuse. However, one time I was meddling with my father's gun and didn't know there were bullets in it. I aimed at our dog and shot and killed him. it was truly an accident, I swear. My father wore me out and said, "Well, I just did that by accident".
