FREDERICK BIRTH

Mr. Birth was born in East St. Louis, Illinois on Feb. 22, 1931. He is a member of Wesley Bethel United Methodist Church where the Rev. Ducree is Pastor. Mr. Birth is sincere, dependable, persistent, cooperative, competent, and compassionate.

Pamela and Paula Birth are his two daughters. Their accomplishments are being recognized in Minneapolis, MN as prima ballerinas and they have danced in the ballet "Nutcracker Suite" as well as other productions. I like to think my participation and love of the arts had something to do with their involvement.

As a Black man in this Christian society, I have grown to become more tolerant and charitable with my fellow man.

My greatest personal achievement was becoming the first East St. Louisan to be elected a district representative for a major Greek letter organization. That, without a doubt, was my proudest moment.

My occupation is serving as Principal of the McHenry Elementary School for East St. Louis School District 189. The challenge of guiding the destiny of 700 young people is both stimulating and invigorating.

Memberships: Assistant Director of the Westbrook Green Concert Choir and Basileus of the Nu Chi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and Tenth District Representative of Omega Psi Phi covering states of Illinois, Indiana, Mich., Wisconsin, and Minnesota.

AWARDS: Nu Chi chapter, Omega Man of the Year, First Place Champion Lincoln Park Tennis Club, Singles Event. My hobby is playing tennis. Favorite television programs are the McNEIL-LEHRER REPORT, 20/20 and SANFORD AND SON. "This is My Beloved" by Walter Benton is my favorite book because it is the most descriptive book ever written about love that I have read.

INSTANCE OF SEGREGATION: I was on my way to college in 1948 when we changed trains in Little Rock, Arkansas. Not noticing the sign, I started drinking from a water fountain marked "For White Only". An upperclassman brought this to my attention and pointed me to the colored fountain. I got loud and replied, "I'd rather die of thirst than drink from that fountain."

PUNISHMENT: My father always lectured me the first time around and then the razor strap talked the second time around. I refused to try to learn "Thanatopis" in high school and my father told me I could not leave the house until I learned it.

AMUSING INCIDENT: My sisters, Irene Oliver and Raymelle Turner were excellent tap dancers. However, whenever they danced and my sister Irene was in doubt, we would notice her looking down at the feet of my older sister. We would tease her about it later.

I live in the community of East St. Louis, Illinois. I like it because it is easy to know personally many people and especially your leaders.
