Note:  The material posted here is only an abridged version of the full text.   It has been heavily edited to focus attention on the cyclone's effects on East St. Louis rather than St. Louis.  The actual book, as printed in 1896 and reprinted by Southern Illinois University Press, is approximately three times as long and contains many more illustrations, descriptions, and anecdotes than are provided here.
