Prepared by the

Federal Writers’ Project

1936

PREFACE

This publication is the work of the Federal Writers’ Project (Illinois), a division of the Works Progress Administration. The project began functioning in November 1935, with the dual purpose of providing employment for needy writers and of collecting and preserving information relating to the history and present scene of this area.

Those journalists, librarians, and public officials who supplied the data herein presented have the gratitude of the makers of this book. The cooperation of…in sponsoring the publication of this guide is also highly appreciated, as is the aid given by those members of an older generation who recalled for us tales of early settlements now absorbed by the city.
