1890 - St. Patrick's and St. Mary's parishes combine to buy Mt. Carmel Cemetery up on the bluffs on present West Main Street in Belleville.Merchants Bridge, just north of present day McKinley Bridge, and three miles north of the Eads Bridge at Ferry Street (Bissell's Point) is opened to railroad traffic. Promoters laid tracks along the levee, hoping to draw business away from the Eads Bridge and its smokefilled tunnel. In 1893, the Terminal Association purchases the Merchant's Bridge and restores its monopoly.
