Pontiac had attended a fancy ball in Cahokia and was wearing the dress uniform of a French army officer given to him by General Montcalm during the French and Indian War. His rebellion in 1765 had kept settlers out of the Illinois area. (Illinois comes from an Indian word that means "tribe of superior men. "Pontiac's friends took revenge on the tribe that killed him by surrounding their village and besieging the place until all of the inhabitants died of hunger. This was at Starved Rock on the Illinois River, now a state park. Pontiac (shown left) is considered the greatest Indian statesman in American history.
