George Rogers Clark, with secret orders from Governor Patrick Henry of Virginia, leaves Fort Pitt and floats down the Ohio River with his small army to capture Kaskaskia and take it from the British. Clark and his men will then march to capture the British fort at Cahokia. Francois Trottier, the commandant, lined up his men in defense, but, seeing his friends and relatives from Kaskaskia among the invaders, surrendered the town and joined the American cause.
