Etienne (Stephen) Pensoneau, a French-Canadian, begins operating a ferry from Cahokia to an area in Missouri three miles south of St. Louis.

Lewis and Clark expedition to explore Louisiana Territory begins in a keelboat on the Illinois side of the Mississippi near Wood River, a few miles north of present day East St. Louis along Route 3. There is currently a historical marker noting the site.
