Among the most famous residents of East St. Louis is Miles Davies and it is fitting that the inspiration of landscape as art in the Transit Station plaza be jazz music. The four transit plaza structures are symbolic of music instruments--percussion, brass, woodwinds, and strings. They emit sound waves in the form of water channels. The waves, each with a different pitch and amplitude, alternate with paved linear spaces. A floor mural at the entry to the station has inscribed musical notes which are lit up and emit sounds as one walks upon them. The sidewalk linking 15th Street with the plaza has sheet music in its paving. The notes are carried up on the vertical plane through steel light poles and ornamental trees.
