Second Work Weekend

The weekend of April 14th, 2000, Beth Lindahl and James Clarke attended a "work weekend" down in East St. Louis.  During this work weekend, these two members of our group helped to improve the neighborhood through community services including some painting and planting of flowers.  They also were given the opportunity to meet with the residents to discuss our ideas through both model and presentation boards.  The following is a few of the comments that we recieved about our design to that point.

Positives

Option of courtyards and front/back areas.

Space for after school kids/playground area.

Assisted living near the community space.

Greenery with the walking paths that weave throughout the site.

Community garden.

Fence the entire site with either wrought iron or wood.

Balconies on the second floor where they may place flowers/grills/patio furniture.

Pond surrounded by walking paths.

Negatives

Pond "unrealistic".

Looks too boxy from perspective sketches.

Smaller, flowering trees are preferred over large shade trees.

Noboby plays shuffleboard so that would be useless.  Maybe incorporate a horseshoe pit instead.

Fencing needed around parking.  Fear of vandalism and theft.

Deck is too large.

Elevator needed by second entrance.

For some residents, walking distance to jobs still an issue.

Below are pictures of what we took to East St. Louis that weekend to show the residents.
