The length of the site offered a broad range of design opportunities.
|
|
The site has a view to the St. Louis Arch.
|
|
A problem with the site is the broken down factories surrounding
it.
|
|
The adjescent railroad tracks are also a design problem.

Concept Model 1
|
Positive Feedback
-
Used earth berms and vegetation barriers around site as alternative to
fencing
-
Having separate functions and building as opposed to single mass
|
Negative Feedback:
-
Community building located in corner, should be more centralized
|
|
Concept Model 2
This scheme has a strong central point in the cylindrical community
building. The independant living apartments are on the left.
These apartments are spaced and skewed to express autonomy or individuality.
The assisted living complex on the right has a glass elevator on the street
side to offer movement to people who may otherwise have trouble moving.
It is also adjascent to a pond so it can be viewed easily from inside.
Next to the tree canopy, a walking path is defined by light poles which
can illuminate the prominade at night, or when the trees cast shade onto
the path. A long pathway cuts through the entire site to unify the
elements of the site.
|
Positive Feedback:
-
Long unifiying walkway
-
Observation deck on top of community building
-
Pond close to assited living
|
Negative Feedback:
-
No screen in front of independant living
-
Independant living far from walkway

Concept Model 2 in the site.

|
Concept Model 3
In this model, main entrance is on the right. It is a center of communication.
The reason I put the entrance here is to avoid the noise of railway. There
are two assisted living buildings, both os which have a commumal space
for old people to have fun, and encourage their self responsibility and
identity. The independent living is on the left hand side. It has its own
entrance. The form of the independent living is lively and active, which
to the great extent has their own activities.
|
Positive Feedback:
-
Atrium area in major buildings
-
Central walkway
|
Negative Feedback:
-
Small commuity building in corner, not incorporated into site
|
|
Concept Model 4
This model shows that there are three parts in the site. The entrance
is located in the middle, while the independent living and assisted living
are in the left and right hand side. The assisted and independent living
both have their own gardenings,, and at the same time they share a outdoor
environment--a pond, which faces to the woods. The concept of the assisted
living is applied here too.

Positive Feedback:
-
Atrium space
-
Central walkway
-
Community building in middle
-
Pond and path
|
Negative Feedback:
-
Two buildings on back of site not linked to anything
