for the elderly, and how to formulate design trends from these issues.

Schwarz, Benyamin, Brent, Ruth. Aging, autonomy, and architecture:
advances in assisted living. Johns Hopkins University Press,
Baltimore: 1999.
This book is about assisted living, combining the
themes of aging, autonomy and architecture. The book has four sections,
all of them focus on the theme of how to be autonomy, which means
to the greatest extent to inspire people to self responsible. Some cases
study is shown how to realize this kind of issue. QJY
Stoneham, Jane, Thoday, Peter. Landscape Design for Elderly
& Disabled People. Packard Publishing Limited, Chichester:
1994.
This book is very interesting. It is also
very informative because readers will get to be exposed to design factors
outside the United States. A variety of topics are covered such as
the importance of the outdoor environment, the Elderly client, modified
for future-use-housing, Design considerations, Outdoor lighting, and Wildlife
interest. There are other useful topics that the authors takes an
in -depth look at. Interested readers will also learn about Legislation
related to housing in the United Kingdom compared to Legislation in Canada,
Europe, and the United States. Another interesting topic covered
in the book is site appraisal factors. We highly recommend this source
for designers involved in the construction of homes for the elderly.
A very good source for exposure to design concepts outside the United States.

Valins, Martin. Housing for Elderly People. The Architectural
Press, London: 1988.
The book Housing for Elderly People is written in
three main sections. The first section is a case study of about ten
elderly housing complexes. It compares what
these complexes did right and what they did wrong.
Valins then goes on and gives ideas on things such as choosing a site and
circulation based on these case
studies. The third section deals with ADA
specifications. JS

Arthur Lubetz Associates Architects
This webpage is very interesting. It belongs to an Architectural firm with two strong establishments in Pennsylvania and Ohio. They do a wide variety of projects such as multi-unit government housing, commercial, residential, small stores, and large office buildings. One of their projects called the Lincoln Towers was designed for the elderly giving us more ideas with our design. –SD/js

Sweden: A holistic approach
This is definitely a great site to visit. It has to do with transportation issues involving the elderly. It is important because elderly residents have been scattered throughout the area hindering, and also limiting transportation. In Sweden, where this problem is occurring, a project developed by the Department of Traffic Planning and Engineering has been brought forward to address the problem. This approach is important because it gives visitors a closer look at the careful dissection of a problem.-SD/js

Housing for Elderly People a guide for architects, interior designers
and their clients
This link is from the Calgary Community Network server. It has to do with the lessened private space belonging to the elderly. With this reduction in private space, the staff workload would in turn be less stressful. The summary takes a closer look at the book reviewed, and visitors are taken to a main Act Book List page when they select the link.-SD/js

Housing Information: Housing for the Elderly
This is one of the more informative sites that we recommend visiting. This webpage belongs to Kensington Park, a well designed elderly community in our opinion. There is plenty of information on this page and we found it very helpful in deciding the most important factors to consider when designing for the elderly. The webpage owners have a FAQ section, a buying a home section, meeting the executive staff, and they even have employment opportunities. A nicely designed page. –SD/js

Department of Corrections Governor’s Affordable Housing Project.
It was a amazing to see what was happening in South Dakota. The Government has looked to the inmates for the construction of housing for the elderly. This page has a few pictures on the finished projects that South Dakota inmates have completed. I think I spent more time puzzled at the thought of inmates constructing the homes people live in. The homes looked very nice, though and will give interested designers another perspective on the design concept. –SD/js

Elderly Housing with Special SVCS
This website would be a great way to start researching before designing for the elderly. It is loaded with great information. It seems geared towards people over the age of fifty-five. The services provided are mainly for the people who need little assistance, but yet want to be independent. It is full of valuable resources such as their services, employment, and how to reach them. Great site! -SD/js

The Nrp Group: From Concept to Completion.
This webpage belongs to a contractor that makes
the dreams of the elderly become a reality. Basically, what these
people are saying is, if you can dream it and pay for it, they can construct
it. They do various jobs such as senior housing, affordable housing,
retail construction, and land development. We found this site to
be informative because sometimes people may forget that every idea comes
with a price tag. Good site. –SD/qiy
