Working with Residents to Create a Sense
of Community
For the past thirty years America's cities have been faced with population shifts to the
suburbs, declining tax bases, decreases in services, and increases in crime. This process
has taken once vibrant and vital areas and thrown them into the midst of neglect and
deterioration. An example of this phenomenon can be found in the city of Springfield,
Illinois, where a predominantly African American community has been facing a declining
standard of living. In order to improve the physical design of this twenty-block
neighborhood, Professor Brian Orland, teaching assistant Janni Sorensen and students from
the Landscape Architecture 338 workshop aligned with the community organization The
Springfield Project. The goal of this project is prepare of suggestions for physical
improvements that can have a direct effect on the lives of community residents. |
