Restoration Ecology and Sustainable Development

Examines the international issues of ecosystem damage.  Provides case studies as examples of how the damage can effect the economies and social aspects of a country.  In order to achieve a sustainable development, the environment must be restored and the current practices of environmental destruction must be stopped. ab

Homeowner's Guide to Landscaping that Saves Energy Dollars

This source is more of a beginner's guide to landscaping that saves energy dollars.  Single family houses, apartment complexes, and town houses are what this book concentrates on most.  Some examples are deflecting winds near seaside houses and using foliage to block out the sun in the summer.  The rest of the book gives examples of basic landscaping like pruning trees and disease control.  dw

Stategies for National Sustainable Development
A handbook designed for practicioners involved in planning strategies for national sustainable development.  It gives suggestions for developing these strategies if previous ones do not exist.  Draws upon experiences from previous practices so that current practioners can use them as examples for their own situations.  ab

Toward Sustainable Development
This source deals with the theory behind sustainable development.  Includes historical information as well as conceptual background information.  Provides new strategies in the development of these policies.  It also clarifies traditional and modern economic methodology and techniques.  In addition, they describe situations where institutional pressures force a seperation between the environment and the work-place.  ab

Landscape Planning for Energy Conservation
Through this source site designers, landscape planners, and landscape architects learn how landscape planning can conserve energy.  By studying wind currents and solar radiation they can use the information to build better conserving houses and utilities.  By controlling microclimate it is possible to control energy usage in heating and cooling of buildings. dw

Landscape Design that Saves Energy
This book outlines the importance of a landscape design for energy conservation.  It provides different designs, ideas, and information for landscapes that are energy efficient based upon a specific climate.  There is also a section that lists information for plants that integrate into the idea of conservative energy uses.  Examples include those such as wind breaks and sun blocking trees.  ab

Renewable Energy: The Power to Choose
This book charts the progress made in the thinking behind energy conservation and how we use our renewable resources.  Many people believe that energy sources seem to come in large packages, this however, is not the case and the earth's supply is begining to dwindle.  Ideas are suggested on how to make the transition from older fossil fuels to new and renewable sources of energy.  af

Ecology and Planning
Ecology has a major contribution to make to planning, but many planners have a limited knowledge of this subject.  This source tries to demonstrate and introduce ecological principles for a wide range of planning activities.  Throughout the book some main topics are abiotic systems, resource planning, and land use techniques.  All of these can be useful in the development of a efficient communtiy.  af

National Councils for Sustainable Development
The NCSD's website best explains their mission in the following paragraphs:

A National Council for Sustainable Development (NCSD) is a mechanism for furthering the implementation of sustainability as expressed in Agenda 21, the plan of action agreed to by national governments at the Earth Summit held in Rio in 1992. The NCSD concept legitimizes the role of civil society as a partner with government in making policy for implementation of the sustainable development agenda and to move it from agenda to action.  It brings together different major groups within society to get a balanced agreement on policies and activities for sustainability.

A National Council for Sustainable Development is a bargaining group. Non-political and non-partisan, its guiding principle is the common good as it applies to the country´s environmental, social and economic priorities and its community and life support systems.

A NCSD is a publicly appointed watchdog body, guarding the common interest and monitoring national progress towards sustainability.    (http://www.ncsdnetwork.org/global/sdresources/q&a/quest-eng.htm) dw

Southamption Sustainability Forum
This is a wonderful organization that promotes the education of the public in sustainability and ecological matters.  This group arranges meetings where the public, private and voluntary sectors representatives meet together regularly to discuss current situations in their community.  They invite in guest speakers and publish regular newsletters on their activity.  Most, if not all, of this information then in put on the web in order to help other communities that may have the same problems. af
