Districts

"Districts are medium-to-large sections of the city, conceived of as having two-dimentional extent,  which the observer mentally enters "inside of", and which are recognizable as having some common identifying character."
Kevin Lynch, "The Image of the City"

Managing the Sense of a Region
Author: Lynch, Kevin.

This book touches on many topics within a city, such as politics and design.  One important topic Lynch analyses though is accessibility.  Lynch states that it is important to see if the people of a city feel the city, as a whole, is difficult to move in certain directions or at certain times or that destinations are hard to be reached.  This analysis shows most cities have one or many of these problems, yet changes can be made to make movement less stressful on the body and mind.    J.N.
