Public Housing Architecture: Concept, Compromise, & Challenge
Author:  Cooper, Terence K.

This article discusses the failure of housing projects.  Housing projects for the most part are drab and similar in appearance.  A good way to help this is to differentiate the buildings through the use of color and shape.  js

A Theory of Good City Form
Author:  Lynch, Kevin

This book examines the value of a city in regard to its spatial characteristics.  Lynch identifies five main criteria and two "meta-criteria":  vitality, sense, fit, access, control, plus efficiency and justice.  He tests his theory on cities of different sizes, densities, and growth rates.  Lynch concludes that an all encompassing model is a work in progress (P. Schwab).  js

The Experience of Place
Author:  Tony Hiss

This article examines what makes people form an attachment to a place and the danger that can result in changing places.  According to Hiss, there are many factors that endear people to a place.  These factors can be sights, smells, shape, textures, or anything a person likes.  A certain danger can result in changing places if a person is not open minded to new experiences and adjusting to the new factors of a place.  js

Garden Variety
Author:  Lampert-Greaux, Ellen

In 1997 the Grammy Awards were moved to Madison Square Garden to provide the excitement of a stadium show.  The lighting and set designer were able to combine that excitement with a more intimate atmosphere.  The stage protruded into the crowd, and the lights were diffuse to accomplish this.  js

New Horizons
Author:  Gallion and Eisner

New Horizons is an explanation of urban and regional design.  Open space within the city is a main topic within urban design.  In the past hundred years the idea of open space has drastically change in city development.  Now, according to this chapter, we must make the most of what little land there is available within the city to create a strong sense of public space.  One, fairly simple, way this can be done is by altering the relationship between buildings and streets.    J.N.
