Project Design --
Four weeks, 35% of final grade.
Intermediate Resident Review
During the work weekend, April 14-15 there
will be another opportunity to get resident feedback on your designs.
This time you will show your progress
and current thinking on one design only.
Do these things:
-
Develop a comprehensive description of the
project you intend to pursue. All projects must include a context-establishing
neighborhood plan, a massing model of the project you propose to pursue
and refine, an illustrative site plan, two site sections, a minimum of
one preliminary floor plan, two building sections (at 1/4"=1 foot scale),
and examples of building design and landscape development details.
Use graphic scales for flexibility in reproduction.
-
Refer back to the specific input you received
from residents when you met before and be prepared to show where you haev
responded to - or ignored for good reason - their input.
Presentation check-list
(some of this you can re-use from the reviews on-campus):
-
Display a massing model for your proposed
scheme at the same scale and in the same style as the previous ones. Be
prepared to talk about how you arrived at that as a result of the resident
input and CITYGreen analysis.
-
Display additional boards showing your context
and illustrative site plans, sections, and examples (perspective sketches
and scanned photos) of details.
Final Review
Presentation check-list:
-
You will display
all of your work for Part 4 of the semester work.
-
Prepare a 15-minute verbal presentation of
your web-based work focussing on the most important features of your design.
-
Display the boards and model you already created
for Part 4a
-
Display a massing model for your proposed
scheme at the same scale and in the same style as the previous ones. Be
prepared to talk about how you arrived at that as a result of the resident
input.
-
Display additional boards showing your context
and illustrative site plans, sections, and any additional details you ave
chosen to show.
Presentation format:
-
Faculty make introductory remarks
-
Each group scheduled to present (3 per day)
makes a 15 minute presentation using their web-page and discuss the ideas
they were exploring in developing their final design, the feedback they
got from residents, and how they responded to that feedback with the design
now being shown.
-
At the end of the first hour the groups take
up positions with their displayed work on boards and jury members informally
meet with groups individually to gain face-to-face feedback. This
continues for aproximately one hour.
-
At the end of the second hour the entire group
reconvenes into an open discussion where jurors are asked to provide commentary
and criticisms for the entire class, and class members are free to enter
into the discussion. Jurors might be asked to identify strengths
and weaknesses and suggest ways to address the latter.
Final Submissions and Completion Dates
Your final grade for the semester will be
based in part on the final presentations, in part on the quality and completeness
of the project web-site your group completes, and on your participation
in the group processes, as judged by both the instructors and your group
partners. You will be expected to attend all reviews as well as all
class sessions through May 3 in order to complete all the evaluation steps.
Group Evaluation:
Due 4:30pm, Monday, May 1
For Monday, May 1 - Individual assignment
- please submit 2 copies, one for each instructor. Answer the following
questions - suggested length 2-3 pages.
1) If you had $1,000 to distribute to your
team for its work throughout the semester, how would you divide up the
money? If you divide it equally, why? If not, why not?
Explain.
2) Explain how your views of East St. Louis
or Springfield have changed as a result of this studio project. What
were your impressions of the city before you began this assignment?
What were your first impressions upon visiting it the first time? What
are your impressions now? Why?
3) What opinions do you have about the
three-stage, rotating reviewers format we used for presentations?
Useful? Confusing? ??
4) Explain how your views of the other
disciplines in the class (architecture, landscape architecture, and in
some cases urban planning) have changed as a result of this studio.
What were your expectations of the other disciplines before you took this
class? Upon what knowledge was this based?
5) Might your experiences in this studio
have any impact on your future career decisions and the type of work you'd
like to do? Why or why not?
Web presentation check-list:
Web-site to be complete by 4:30pm, Wednesday,
May 3
-
You must archive
and organize all of your work for Parts 2, 3, and 4 of the semester work.
-
Provide an introductory index.html
page of your work that summarizes, in a compelling way, your design and
and issues it addresses.
-
Provide links to individual pages that show
the development of your thinking - for instance, including digital images
(scanned or camera) of the material you already created for Parts
2, 3, and 4a.
-
Include images of the three massing
models you presented for Part 3 as well as the final model.
-
If your group was able to complete it, show
and discuss the results of the CITYGreen analysis.
-
Include in the section devoted to your final
design - your context and illustrative site plans, sections, elevations
and perspectives.
-
Schematic plans MUST be fully annotated
to explain the design decisions you have made and cite the sources for
your ideas.
Make sure you provide links to:
-
Background research findings and references
as appropriate.
-
Other resources useful to developing your
design. (EGRETS,
Old
Map Atlas)
-
Any design and planning illustrations of design
prototypes that you used.
