The design and planning task:

... is to fit a major new sports facility into an existing neighborhood

There is plenty of land, much of it flat, presently unoccupied and close to major transportation and existing recreational services. Go check out the map data base of ESL using the EGRETS interface

The proposed facility will include a first-class natatorium, child-care, elderly day programs and health maintenance programs. It is sponsored by East St. Louis-born celebrities and is assured of a rousing inauguration and public attention.

We have a lot of information already in the ESLARP on-line archives. Use the Quick Links to connect to some of them.

The Lansdowne neighborhood has suffered some of the worst losses of population of any in the city. Its pattern of streets is disrupted by abandonment, the adjacent and once-beautiful city park has fallen into disuse and misuse and the proposed site is bordered by busy railroads and a major highway.

Lansdowne Neighborhood Improvement Plan

This studio will be a collaboration of design studios in Architecture and Landscape Architecture and citizens of East St. Louis. The Architecture studio will work mainly with the 3-d modeling software, formZ. Landscape Architects will use combinations of AutoCAD, formZ, VRML, Photoshop, Virtus WalkThrough, ArcView. All work will be made available in electronic format via the WWW.

Class meets face-to-face from 2:00-5:00 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. You are expected to be in class unless told explicitly that attendance is not necessary.

In addition I am setting-up an electronic, on-line forum for problem-solving and discussion. For that we will use FirstClass software.

It is easiest to reach me via e-mail -- b-orland@uiuc.edu
You can try the phone too -- 333-0177, but I am not good at returning voice mail
Or you can just drop by -- 308 Temple Buell Hall

Grade: (this is under review and will change)

30% on in-class seminar participation.

70% on individual design work

Evaluation:

A, B, C, etc letter grades with +/-.

Refer to the departmental guidelines for detailed explanations but we regard good work as "B" work. "A" is reserved for truly outstanding work, "C" is adequate and "D" is below our expectations for you.

Attendance:

... is critical. You neither contribute nor gain from a class if you are not present. I will view unexcused absences very seriously and will deduct 5% from your grade for each one.
