The Kriegsfeld
Housing Development Group of the Design Workshop II studio will undertake
a semester long research/design project that will endeavor to create strategies
and plans for the development of housing in the city of East St. Louis,
Illinois. Over the course of the semester the group will collaborate to
achieve:

a city wide planning scheme for
1,100 unit of replacement public housing (Lead Designers: Bernosky/Horstmann)
-
an investigation of existing
environmental conditions, impacts of the new developments and proposals
for future ecological improvements (Lead Designer: Tadros)
The scope
of issues that this project will address include the need for new public
housing in the East St. Louis, the desire for in-fill in the areas that
have seen massive amounts of housing loss over the past thirty years, the
environmental hazards of sites that have previously been occupied, and
the contributions that these developments will provide to the East St.
Louis communities.
The resources
that will be utilized throughout this process will be extensive. These

of policies and laws regarding land use and development
The Tadros team will further
focus on:

an exploration of land, air,
and water quality in East St. Louis

pin pointing existing ecological
hazards (i.e. air permitted facilities, toxic release locations, underground
storage tank locations)

the development of city wide
projects for ecological improvement (i.e. pocket parks, tree and shrub
nurseries, urban wetlands, tree farming)
-
assisting the Bernosky/Horstmann
team in the collection and analysis of data for the placement of housing
developments
