EAST ST LOUIS ACTION RESEARCH PROJECT

LA/UP341 Fall 1997

Wildlife/Habitat Impacts

New land available for wildlife will be generated from the recreation area. As previously mentioned, the recreation area will contain playground equipment and a small area for sitting and talking. The boundaries of the area will be planted with trees, small shrubs, and flowers. Vegetation will be selected on the basis of its wildlife value and its ability to withstand a heavily developed site. As much as possible, the vegetation chosen will be reflective of the indigenous environment.Wildlife might also be attracted through the use of feeding stations, bird feeders or small platforms to attract small mammals. Feeding stations could become a problem if they begin to attract unwanted wildlife such as rats and mice. If the recreation area borders a vacant lot, one possible community project might be to extend the recreation area into the vacant lot. However, if there is a neighboring vacant lot, invasive weed species will be a problem. If the recreation area is completely surrounded by built land, attracting wildlife will be more difficult. To overcome this, a tree/shrub planting program for the downtown business district could be established to connect the existing wildlife patches.

This map shows the three different land uses in the area of our proposed site: Commercial 1+ Stories, Commercial 1-2 Story, and Public Land.

Central Business District Land Usage

This map shows the following land covers near our building location: High Density Urban, Medium Density Urban, Crop Land, and Forested and Wooded Land.

Central Business District Land Cover

This map shows that there are no railroads near our building location. Therefore, we will not be able to convert them into wildlife or plant habitat .

Central Business District Railroads

This map shows that there are no streams near our site, so a stream habitat will not be available.

East St. Louis Streams

This map shows that our building location is not in a floodzone, therefore we do not need to consider the effects of flooding.
