Habitat Evaluation

We plan to plant numerous species of trees along the street and around the theatre.  By introducing different trees, and various shrubbery and flowers, we are providing habitats for several different animals.  We will plant oaks which produce food for squirrels, and also will provide shade and protection for these small animals.  Many kinds of birds, such as cardinals, bluejays, and robins, will be attracted and build nests within the oaks. We will plant flowering dogwoods which are beautiful ornamentals and attract insects, such as butterflies.  Finally, we will plant hackberry trees that produce fleshy red berries which act as a wildlife food source.  During the warmer months several tables and chairs will be set up outside in front of the theatre.  People will be able to enjoy their food and beverages while they observe wildlife on our patio.  Planting trees and greenery will benefit our project because we are providing landscape for the downtown area as well as supplying food and shelter for animals.

The open areas along the riverfront of East St. Louis is home to numerous tree species.  The trees enable wildlife to form habitats.  As our cafe/theatre is within boundaries of these habitats, wildlife frequently visit our area to find further resources.  A more diversified area invites more species to use our street trees and landscape.  Their presence allows the public to view wildlife up close.  This gives a better idea of how wildlife depends on resources such as trees and natural water ecosystems to survive.  As people become more educated, they learn to appreciate all aspects of wildlife.
