Practical 11 --
Plant/Wildlife Habitat Potential
Habitat potential of land-use change in ESL
- Work as a group.
- Consider the land-use change you have proposed and investigate wildlife
and plant habitat implications and opportunities.
- Use EGRETS/ArcView
to identify patches, corridors, matrices, of habitat value.
- Prepare a brief report as part of your land-use evaluation homepage, linked
to maps, illustrations and other relevant reports within the ESLARP
on-line resources.
- The report should take into account what you have found out about the mapped
and any other open space resources in the region, and any assumptions and
guesses based on your own knowledge of the area. I want you to prepare
a report that describes (a) how your proposed development might impact wildlife
and plant habitat resources through expansion or reduction of areas of native
vegetation, development of habitat corridors etc. or (b) how the proposal
might protect a resource from either being misguidedly destroyed, or from
being "loved to death." Use the WWW to find out about the area through EGRETS
and any other means. Think about hunting, hiking/nature study, and other potentials.
- Either as credits within the report, or independently via e-mail, identify
individual group members' contributions.
- Due: Wednesday, December 3

GIS and GIS resources
While the EGRETS library holds a lot of relevant material, some of you
with GIS experience will be able to make much more specific enquiries of
the data we have assembled in the ESLARP GIS database.
There is a detailed introduction to GIS and the resources we have in
that database already on-line with descriptions prepared by Abhijeet Chavan
and others:
ArcView2 is a simple map analysis package (a kind of mini-GIS) for which we
do have specific material prepared, including the map data (called coverages)
and a tutorial. ArcView is available in the Planning lab on the PCs and can
be made available in the LA studios if specific machines can be identified.
ArcView data is available on both the Planning and LandArch GAIA servers:
And if you are not into ArcView and you need a map you cannot find, mail the
ESLARP GIS team and they'll try to help you out:
