Practical 2 --
Publishing your work on the World Wide Web:
-
Work in teams where at least one of you is familiar with preparing documents
for the World-Wide-Web using HTML. (see below)
-
Each person in the class should prepare a document containing their references
collected in Assignment 1 and post it to a WWW homepage on their students.uiuc.edu
account.
-
Enter the address of your homepage in a message posted to the FirstClass
discussion forum so that we all can link to it and see what you have collected.
-
Give yourself plenty of time to make changes after you have made the document.
-
Post it by Monday morning at 10:00am.

Working with HTML:
There are some tricky parts to this practical and not enough instructor
to go around. For that reason I'm suggesting that even though this is an
individual assignment it will be wise to work in small groups.
This is what we are aiming for -- check out these refs on my "staff"
homepage:
http://www.staff.uiuc.edu/~b-orland/341prac.html
Your address will look just like that but for the word "staff" and the
login "b-orland." -- something like http://www.students.uiuc.edu/~a-stude/341prac.html
ps. if the server is too busy to find that file, and you get a "not
found" message, try this one instead:
http://www.imlab.uiuc.edu/~brian/341prac.html
or even
http://bajada.landarch.uiuc.edu/~brian/341prac.html
To help get your accounts set up to serve up your home pages, I will
be around in the first practical as well as Deanna Koenigs.
Deanna has been scouring the net and has found a tutorial for using
Netscape Composer as an html editor. Please work through the tutorial and
ask for help as you need it.
Guides you through the set up of permissions on your UNIX account
for serving out your web pages.
Designed for beginners with no html or web design experience.
Uses a wizard for creating your first web page.
Guides you through the publishing process in Composer to get
your pages onto your UNIX account and viewed by everyone.
After you have created your first page using the Netscape Composer Wizard,
you will want to edit that page to make it more suitable to your assignment
in Practical 2. The following links will provide you with more help
on editing pages, adding links, adding images, etc.

it still has some useful directions for cutting and pasting text, adding
images, adding links, etc.
If you get ambitious with your own home page check out the UIUC CCSO pages
on Web Publishing and especially the page on Publishing via your UNIX account
on students.uiuc.edu.

latest features, check out the following links on web design:
And now ...
At the end of this Practical you may have realized that you now have your
own site on the Web. You might also decide there is more to your life than
341 and you want a more personal image out there. If you create a new page
and name it index.html the servers at CCSO are set up to automatically
serve up that file when a browser asks for your account without an /????.html
at the end. For an example, you might look at mine:
http://www.staff.uiuc.edu/~b-orland
or again if it's too busy try:
