Mixed-use Urban Center Renewed

Yinyuan Qing

Community design is a people business...

Although the depression of central business district seems to be an unavoidable tendency happening in many U.S. cities, especially those traditional areas, more city planners and elected officers now are aware of the necessity and potential of revitalizing the existing urban centers instead of encouraging unlimited urban sprawl. A new sustainable strategy for urban renewal is adopted in the study of East St. Louis' central business district. Therefore, a mixed-used urban development scheme initiated by the light rail system is proposed for the future of the city.
