LOUIS, JULY 6, 1999 President Clinton's New Markets Initiative brought him to East St. Louis on Tuesday July 6th, 1999. The faculty, staff and students of ESLARP and the NTAC were there in full force. With him and his entourage were East St. Louis' Mayor Powell, Reverend Jessie Jackson, Jackie Joyner Kersee and a host of other VIPs. ../clips/clinton99/ ___________________________________________________________________ ESLARP TECHNOLOGY PRESENTED AT URISA CONFERENCE, CHICAGO Deanna Koenigs presented ESLARP's geographic data collection techniques as well as EGRETS. Raja Shankar and Sarah Duffy extended the capabilities of the Project's on-line Urban System's Model (USM) to enable users to gain a sense of how impacts generated by proposed development projects would be distributed throughout the St. Louis metropolitan area. A paper on the model and posters illustrating it's capabilities were presented by Sarah Duffy and Edgar Flagg at the URISA meeting in Chicago in August. The USM was also presented at CUPUM in Venice in September. ../usm/ ___________________________________________________________________ FALL 1999 ESLARP COURSES LA341 Land Resource Evaluation This course looks at different ways of evaluating the land, problems that arise when attempting to evaluate land, and policies that may be developed to address those problems. ../la/LA341-F99/ ARCH371 Your Place, My Place, Their Place: A Housing Environments Studio An architectural design studio with an emphasis on designing housing environments of different types for different users. The Emerson Park Development Corporation, as part of the Neighborhood Faith-Based Housing Program, requests that this design studio develops 10 homes which will be built beginning in July of 2000. EPDC will construct the ten homes next summer for low to very low income families. ../arch/ARCH371-F99/ ___________________________________________________________________ ILLINOIS BOTTOMLAND EXPLORER (IBEX) RELEASED Explore the online history of East St. Louis. LOUIS PHOENIX WEBSITE The Phoenix website was developed with the intent of exhibiting some of the accomplishments and contributions that people from East St. Louis have made to society. We would like to wish a warm good bye to the following ESLARPians: - Ken Reardon is currently on sabbatical at Cornell University but will be back with us in 2000. - Tom Shields has moved on to become the Director of Volunteer Programs at UIUC. - Abhijeet Chavan is currently unemployed and living on the beach in Long Beach, California. ___________________________________________________________________ HELLO Welcome the following new additions and changes to ESLARP! - Vicki Eddings has stepped in as the Project Administrative Coordinator. She is now the GIS/Web Coordinator for ESLARP. - Yong Wook Kim has taken on some of the other challenges left by Abhijeet's departure and is now the system administrator for ESLARP. - Natasha Knight and Nidhi Tomar are new ESLARP Research Assitants.
