Introduction

One of the major projects of this month was NTAC’s success of recruiting over 100 volunteers to participate in the blitz build of six pre-thatched huts/pavilions for the Katherine Dunham Artisanal Village.

 

NTAC staff and additional EZ committee members worked on the comprehensive 150-page strategic plan for the Empowerment Zone application for East St. Louis, St. Louis, and Wellston (St. Louis County).

 

NTAC staff and University of Illinois (ESLARP) faculty and students participated in the last Work Weekend of the year (October 2nd & 3rd). NTAC/ESLARP picked up trash, landscaped two homes, and renovated three apartments in the Emerson Park neighborhood. NTAC (Patricia Nolan) published the October/November NTAC Newsletter.

 

On October 9th, the NTAC along with Illinois State Representative Wyvetter Young took several East St. Louis residents to Paducah Kentucky to visit a vocational technical college. The purpose of this visit was to compare Paducah’s College to Metropolitan Community College in East St. Louis.

 

Adventures in Motivation(AIM)

Patricia Nolan, NTAC Community Planner, met with Stanford Scott and Rufus Williams to prepare a presentation on the AIM Action Park.

 

Alta Sita Neighbors, Inc. (ANSI)

NTAC staff attended Alta Sita Neighbors, Inc. monthly meeting on October 8, 1998.

 

Citizens for theFuture

NTAC provided computer access to the Director of Citizens for the Future, David Wilson. Mr. Wilson created budgets for the organization and used Internet access to research potential funders.

 

Carver Community Center

Craig A. Miller, Sr., NTAC Community Design Specialist, met with Carver Community Center board members and CDBG staff regarding roof repairs to be executed at the Carver Community Center.

 

East St. Louis Planning Commission

Damon Y. Smith, NTAC Director, met with Roco Goins, regarding the East St. Louis Comprehensive Plan. Mr. Smith assisted Mr. Goins in developing the objectives of this plan. On October 14th and 28th, Damon Smith and Patricia Nolan met with Stevie Cox, CDBG planner, to evaluate the site plan for the 25th and State Street Shopping Center Development and the Parsons Place Residential Development Project.

 

Emerson Park Development Corporation (EPDC)

NTAC staff created maps of single-family home development sites for Emerson Park’s Youthbuild application. Craig A. Miller, Sr. as well as ESLARP faculty and student volunteers provided basic carpentry services for the interior renovation of EPDC apartment buildings located in Washington Park. NTAC/ESLARP faculty, staff, and students landscaped the front and rear yards of two homes and picked up trash throughout the neighborhood.

 

Empowerment Zone (EZ)

On October 9, 1998, the NTAC staff and additional EZ committee members began working on the comprehensive strategic plan for the Empowerment Zone application. The strategic plan addressed issues of economic and workforce development and included a community vision, goals, specific projects and programs, timelines, budgets, and citizen input for East St. Louis, St. Louis, and Wellston (St. Louis County).

 

Katherine Dunham Centers for Arts and Humanities

NTAC staff recruited over 100 volunteers for the Artisinal Village Blitz Build, which occurred on Friday, October 23rd through Sunday, October 25th. Six thatch huts/pavilions were constructed as a phase one development of the Artisanal Village. Craig A. Miller, Sr. supervised the construction of the huts/pavilions. This project is funded by URPS. Craig Miller continued to oversee additional Katherine Dunham Museum projects including final change orders for the plumbing project and lead-base paint testing at the Dunham Museum (Neighbors United for Progress is executing lead- base paint testing).

 

Olivette Park Neighborhood Association (OPNA)

Patricia Nolan set up accounting and bookkeeping for the Olivette Park Neighborhood Association Halloween party. Patricia organized and attended the Halloween Party on October 30, 1998. Patricia also prepared a quartly report to the Self-Development of People Foundation.

 

Upward Bound

The NTAC staff provided East St. Louis census data and maps to the Upward Bound Program at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.

 

 

Paducah Kentuky Trip
