Outreach Weekend, Fall 1997 #3

Despite the cold, it was a very successful community outreach weekend. We brought nearly 100 University students to East St. Louis and completed work at 7 sites around the community. The following are brief descriptions of the main projects they completed

Bolden Community Garden

Students landscaped and planted trees, flowers, and bushes.

Farmer's Market

Dismantled the food stands and cleaned up at the Farmer's Market, which was started by a University/Community partnership and is wrapping up its fourth year of successful operation.

Edgemont Data Collection

Conducted parcel condition surveys on over 1,000 parcels in the Edgemont neighborhood. Information collected included building condition, parcel condition, number of street trees, land use, etc. Global Positioning System units were used to collect satellite data.

Katherine Dunham Museum

Cleaned and repaired the floor at the Katherine Dunham Museum and carriage house studio.

Adventures in Motivation

Painted four rooms in the Adventures in Motivation after-school youth center in the Edgemont neighborhood.

Other Activities

Door-knocked and passed out flyers in the Winstanley/Industry Park neighborhood to inform residents how to get involoved in the neighborhood organization.

Cleaned and cut a vacant lot and alley in Olivette Park at 619 Seventh Street.
