Providing Internet and Computer Access

ESLARP has developed an award-winning web site (/) that was utilized as an internal and external communications vehicle. In 1996-97, the website was upgraded to include the latest in ESLARP news, reports, and photos. The site has generated a great deal of outside interest in the Project, attracting 50,000 "hits" each month from around the world.

Internet access To ensure that vast informational and technological resources of the University and the world wide web are accessible to ESLARP's community partners, extensive effort was focused on increasing the number of Internet access points in the community and providing necessary computer training and support to community-based organizations. One way this was achieved was through recycling outdated, but still serviceable, University of Illinois equipment for community-based organizations, and providing new computer equipment, when economically feasible. Through this effort, Internet access points were established at five sites throughout East St. Louis. In addition, ESLARP staff led a hands-on computer workshop, enabling East St. Louis residents to become more familiar with computer technology.
