Alternative Spring Breaks

Wartburg College Group ESLARP and the Neighborhood Technical Assistance Center were approached by a number of institutions sponsoring alternative spring break trips for college students in the spring of 1997. The Project was able to help organize and facilitate the visits of four such groups over three weeks in March. Students from Wartburg College, Southern Methodist University, Northwestern University, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign spent their spring breaks in East St. Louis repairing and cleaning structures, clearing vacant lots, and working with school children.

The efforts of these groups increased the amount of assistance that ESLARP was able to give to community organizations, while providing students with valuable experiences in culture, teamwork and community service. ESLARP seeks to continue to involve other colleges and universities with these spring break service visits in future years.
