Improving Local Housing Conditions
Architecture, landscape architecture, and urban planning students were involved in a variety of housing improvement and design projects. ESLARP staff assisted the Winstanley Industry Park Neighborhood Organization in obtaining CHDO designation and $256,000 to implement a rental rehabilitation project. WIPNO expects to begin renovation of these units by Fall, 1996 and to make them available by January, 1997.
In Emerson Park, University and community volunteers teamed up to complete more than a dozen housing assistance projects for low-income residents, including scraping and painting, roof replacement and repair, and fascia, soffiting and gutter replacement. Student architects worked with the Emerson Park Development Corporation to develop a housing strategy for the neighborhood and created alternative designs for affordable single- family, duplex and multi-generational housing to be located near the proposed light rail stop in that neighborhood. At the EPDC's request, ESLARP students also created designs for the light rail station itself and transit-oriented retail and commercial development around the station, creating public support for the Emerson Park route.
