Hi, my name is Crystal Whiters and I was raised in Homewood, IL, a south suburb of Chicago. After graduating from the University of IL at Urbana-Champaign (BS, chemistry, AB Spanish), I served in AmeriCorps, working with high-risk pregnant mothers from the Westside of Chicago. In addition to ensuring the mothers received quality healthcare and access to social services, my fellow AmeriCorps members and I worked with neighborhood organizations to plan service projects throughout the course of our year of service.
During the application process to graduate school, I became aware of ESLARP. This awareness motivated the return to the University of IL as an architecture student. In August 2006, I began the ESLARP experience, designing a community center for EPDC in Prof. Robert Selby’s design studio. August 2007 was the start of my first ESLARP RA experience, assisting with administrative tasks in the office and supervising a cemetery restoration project in East St. Louis during an outreach weekend.
Community development and historic preservation are the areas of interest to me. This year, I am working as a community liaison with neighborhood partners.
