FAA 391 students' research from Fall 2010 gets published in a textbook on homelessness

In the 2010 Fall Semester, students in FAA 391 researched best practices of Permanent Supportive Housing models for housing the homeless.  They published a report which was presented to the Cities of Champaign and Urbana.  Part of this report was published by Greenhaven Press in their textbook series, "Opposing Viewpoints".  Read the original report here.

I am currently a graduate student in the Recreation, Sport and Tourism department working towards my Master’s degree. I recently graduated from the University of Georgia with my Bachelor’s in Speech Communication.

During my time at the University of Georgia, I worked in special events with the Red Cross, the Multiple Sclerosis Society, and the Special Olympics. I worked in marketing for a public relations firm and was an account executive for advertising at a newspaper.

While working with the Special Olympics I was introduced to and became interested in the play of children. In my graduate studies, I am focusing on the developmental play of special needs children. Play therapy and playground design are of particular interest to me. While attending school I am a nanny. One of the four children that I watch has special needs. She has inspired her mother to open an inclusive facility called “Larkin’s Place,” which has partnered with the YMCA. I am thrilled to be allowed to see what goes on behind the scenes of opening and running such a facility.

This is my first semester working with ESLARP and I am very excited to be a part of such a great outreach program. I am eager to learn from my colleagues and their different expertise areas. I also hope to share my insight into the world of special needs whenever possible.
