The focus of this workshop was on plan implementation and grant writing. The workshop participants worked with East St Louis nonprofits. Students assisted the organizations by helping them develop fundable projects and programs. In addition, students learned to find funding opportunities from small donations to federal grants as well as write proposals.
Our community partners (and project focus):
- American Bottoms Conservancy (environmental) – organization profile, final student presentation, Kodak American Greenways Grant Program.
- Concerned Citizens of Precinct 12 (neighborhood improvements) – organization profile, final student presentation, Illegal Dumping Reporting Flyer.
- Emma L. King Wilson Foundation (restoration of the fountain at Jones Park) – organization profile, final student presentation, brick purchased by students.
- ESLARP (expanding capacity of university outreach) – organization profile, final student presentation.
- Opal’s House (women’s shelter) – organization profile, final student presentation, adopt a room brochure and flyer.
- South End New Development Organization (neighborhood organization) – organization profile, final student presentation.
- 41 Street Neighborhood Action Group (creating a neighborhood park) – organization profile, final student presentation, EPA Idea Bank.
The course included guest lectures and visits to non-profits, foundations and government agencies to learn about how these organizations both distribute grant money as well as apply for additional funding.
